Where does James Proclaim?

James Proclaims (4)

Today’s assignment on Writing 101 came in two parts.

One part was to create a poll asking my readers for suggestions for me to write about in a future task.

I haven’t done a poll but if anyone reading this has a burning desire to read my take on a particular topic then please comment below.

The other part of today’s task was to describe the place where the magic happens.

Where am I based when all these amazing proclamations find their way from the inner workings of my psyche to the pages of a blog that is read by literally tens of people all over the world?

Imagine, if you will, an oak-paneled study, with bookcases full of hard-back classics and a large mahogany desk complete with luxurious leather chair facing a large window with  a stunning view of a well maintained garden, complete with orchard and water feature.

Can you picture it?

It might look a bit like this:

Obviously my writing space is nothing like this.

I write in my guest room. I call it the guest room because out of the two bedrooms in my tiny house, it’s the room that Mrs Proclaims and I don’t sleep in.

It’s not actually fit for guests though.

It’s not a bad room in terms of size, although the clutter does make it seem smaller. As far as furniture goes, it contains all the stuff that didn’t really survive the move two years ago, but is just about functional enough to serve a purpose. For example there is a chest of drawers, which breaks every time I attempt to open a drawer. It mainly survives because it contains items that I don’t need to access very often. The room is full of stuff like that.

I don’t write in this space because I find the room particularly inspirational. It’s just where my desk-top  lives.

It’s a few years old now, but were I a heroic cowboy from a classic western, then my computer would be my trusty steed. It’s never let me down.

Apart from all the times it has.

So to sum up, I mostly write in the guest room, but if I had a laptop rather than a desktop, I may well choose to write elsewhere.

You should write about bees. I’m not sure why bees, but it’s the first thing that came to my head.

Bees and hummingbirds. Both are very interesting.

Hummingbirds are interesting. I know nothing about them but I’ve never let that stop me from writing on a subject before…

If you could see the actual room I’m in your jealousy would turn to pity…

Nice. So what’s your real desk and chair like? I need more information here, James. I ask because I am in the market for a new desk chair, and I am interested in what other bloggers are sitting in. Could you please do some research and write about the top five best desk chairs in your next post? I have a burning desire to know.

Actually I do have a nice chair. Nothing like the one in the picture but it’s a faux-leather office chair that is actually the third most comfortable chair in my house. Which probably says as much about the rest of my house as it does about the chair…

I love your posts. I can so relate…..Our guest room is no longer accessible for even getting to the desk! So I now write on the dining room table which is where our computers (his and mine) have gotten placed since the “guest room” is overflowing. My better half believes that every horizontal surface is meant to be piled upon…. so the desks (yes, there are 2 in there) are piled upon. My requests to clear it up get an eye roll. Do you get eye rolls from Mrs Proclaims? And dinner parties? It takes an effort to clear the dining room – those piles go on the bed, which must be moved in order to sleep. Does my life sound on the border of hoarding?
