The Will Of The People

Who is this ‘Will Of The People’
He that cannot be denied
And must be honoured, revered and obeyed?
I can think of many Wills
But none that strike me
As being ‘Of The People’

Not the Conqueror I’d wager
Or the one who liked Orange
And certainly neither Pitt Junior
Nor indeed Senior
And it really doesn’t seem
Like it was  Wilberforce’s thing

I doubt very much it’s
Shakespeare or Wordsworth
Popular in their own way
But less influential to modern ears
Than perhaps they were in days gone by

A more modern Will perhaps?
Not our beloved heir to the throne?
A prince indeed but
In times such as these
Perhaps a Fresh Prince
Would offer fresh perspective
So could it be Smith?
A Man in Black to guide us
Safely from alien invasion
As we head blindly towards
Our very own Independence Day

But I think it is another Will we seek.
There were no flies on Golding
And though we could always rely
On Shatner to boldly go wherever was required
He seems an unlikely candidate
For this Enterprise

Maybe will.i.am?
Alas, though he searches weekly
For The Voice of the people
I think in fact
‘The Will’ he is not

So the search goes on
For this so-called Will
I can only assume that I seek
An actual person
Who understands the finely nuanced arguments
Surrounding the issues which affect us all

Because it would be ludicrous to assume
That ‘The Will Of The People’
Is just an abstract concept
Based on 52% of 72.2% of the population
(which is of course 37.544% of an electorate
That did not include the children whose future was stolen
Or the perfectly legal immigrants who now live in fear)
Who voted in an ill-conceived
Poorly defined referendum
A concept exploited by a populist press
To undermine rational thinking
And create a climate of fear and anger

Surely that cannot be
The true ‘Will Of The People’

But as I was one of the 48%
Of the 72.2%
Maybe I no longer qualify
As one of ‘The People’
And my opinion is irrelevant
