Well, here we are again, at the culmination of the Black Friday celebrations. After an exciting ‘Black Friday Week’ in which the deals were, quite literally, too good to be true, we arrive at the day itself.
Black Friday Day.
Surely everyone’s favourite day of the year.
A magical day.
I’ve already bought five new TVs this morning alone.
It’s just a shame I’ve got to go to work, or I’d have probably bought another one.
To go with the sixth new sofa I’ve purchased.
Two years ago, I wrote about what a bizarre concept Black Friday is, particularly the preposterous way we have appropriated it here in the UK.
I’d have been totally fine with us appropriating Thanksgiving, which as far as I can tell is a bit like Christmas but in November.
I could get on board with that.
But Black Friday without a preceding Thanksgiving is lamentable.
Obviously because I wrote about it two years ago, there’s no point in me rehashing the same arguments – they haven’t changed so you can read them again by clicking here.
Did you read it?
Don’t I make a compelling case?
So why is it still going on?
Can someone please sort this out?
Or at least make the supposed ‘deals’ actually worthwhile?
I don’t want to be having this conversation next year.
It needs to stop.
I agree. Stop the madness!

I’d come along and help but I must dash to the shops, I’ve just seen a bargain – goose feather quilts are down!

Well I don’t blame you for having a gander…

In the end I chickened out. It was quite cheap but, even so, I could not afford such a paltry sum!

Hilarious that you have Black Friday and it’s not after Thanksgiving. Do you have a Thanksgiving Day? I believe it is in October in Canada, but I don’t know if they have Black Friday. It always seems odd to me that the Friday before Easter is Good Friday and the day of crazy bargains is Black Friday.

None of it makes any sense, and no, we don’t have any kind of Thanksgiving Day, which is probably why we have to put up with nonsense like ‘Black Friday week’…

I do not participate in the Black Friday madness. I’d rather eat ground glass. Thanksgiving, on the other hand, is only about getting together with family and eating way too much delicious food. No gifts to buy, no decorations to display. If you’re going to copy one of our holidays in the UK, I highly recommend Thanksgiving.

I’m definitely going to copy it next year and if my boss doesn’t like it… well maybe I could celebrate it on a different day…
