James’ Shamelessly Nostalgic A-Z Of Cartoon Characters That He Liked As A Child – Part 1: Athos and Aramis

James Proclaims (6)

It’s Easter Sunday, a day of not inconsiderable religious significance for some people, which I absolutely respect, though I am not especially of a religious persuasion myself. It also is a day on which we’re encouraged to eat lots of chocolate, so long as that chocolate comes in the shape of an egg,  and this is something that I’m more than happy to get on board with. I’ll certainly be having my fill of egg-shaped chocolate today.

Easter Sunday is not always on the 1st April – given that the need for it to specifically happen on a Sunday precludes it from occurring on a consistent calendar date. I imagine there are other factors, which also determine when Easter occurs, because it’s sometimes in March and sometimes in April and sometimes it’s right at the start of April, but other times it’s at the end of April. I don’t know what those factors are. Perhaps I’ll look them up, or maybe I’ll continue in my ignorance. As long as I get to eat lots of chocolate I’m basically fine with it happening whenever it happens.

What does always occur on the 1st April is the much loved April Fools Day celebration, where we all go out of our way to make our family and friends look a bit stupid, while hoping that they don’t make us look a bit stupid in return. If you are going to embark on a little ‘fool-mockery’ today then be sure to observe the key rule – humiliating people is a morning activity only. If you catch someone out with a witty fabrication in the afternoon then tradition dictates that it is you who is the fool, not them. Even if they still clearly are fools for falling for such an obvious prank…

This year, April 1st is also the day on which I down my usual blogging tools and pick up my specially commissioned alphabetised tools in order to take part in the, now traditional, A-Z Blogging Challenge. This year (as you’ll know if you bothered to read this explanatory post) I’ll mostly be blogging about cartoon characters that I liked in my youth. Which brings us neatly on to my first cartoon character (or in this case characters) of choice. Today, being the first day of the challenge is is all about the letter ‘A’:

A

‘A’ is for Athos and also for Aramis.

002

They were two of the fabled ‘three musketeers’ from Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel ‘The Three Musketeers’. Which I’ve never read. But I have seen numerous adaptations which, as we all know, is exactly the same as reading the book.

And my favourite adaptation, beyond a shadow of a doubt, was the brilliant 80’s cartoon Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds, in which all the protagonists were portrayed as animals (and mostly, but not exclusively, as dogs).

I was never quite sure why they were called ‘muskehounds’ in the title and theme tune and then referred to as musketeers in the cartoon itself. But no matter, it’s a tiny criticism of what was one of the seminal cartoons of my youth.

Another criticism might be that the characters of Porthos and Athos seemed, in the cartoon, to have been mixed up – ‘Porthos the muskehound’ largely had the character traits of  ‘Athos the musketeer’ from the book and vice versa. It never bothered me too much, but it does seem a strange mistake to have made.

However, let’s not dwell on that now. Instead, let’s all sing along with the fantastic theme tune.

All together now:

One for all and all for one
Muskehounds are always ready
One for all and all for one
Helping everybody…

I know I’m gonna love this series James not least for the reason that a while back I compiled a similar list myself. I don’t think it would be stealing any of your thunder since the majority of my list were creations of the 1960’s –

That is an awesome list – some of those could have made my list (in that I definitely watched them when I was a kid) but I have mostly stuck to 80s and 90s this time around. Was very tempted to include Batfink though – one of the all time greats

BATFINK (‘Your bullets cannot harm me. My wings are like a shield of stee!’) is indeed a deadset cartoon Hall of Famer!

Great list Glen. I couldn’t leave a comment on your site to point out that you forgot my all-time favorite – Underdog! 🙂

I thought I had an encyclopedic knowledge of kids cartoons from the 60’s/70’s but I now realise there are gaping holes in that knowledge and UNDERDOG is one of them!

How could I have no recall of a U.S cartoon that ran for 124 episodes on CBS and NBC between 1964 and 1973? People say if you remember the 60’s you weren’t really there but I was there! (Ok, sort of there. I was 4 years old in 1970, which I’m guessing, would make me seem as old as a wooden abacus to the majority of people reading James’ blog).

I confess I never knew the 2007 Disney movie UNDERDOG, which I have seen a number of times with my own daughter, was based on this 1960’s cartoon series.

With James’ permission, here’s the ol’ intro to the series (for the benefit of all our cartoon knowledge banks – tee hee) –
Sidenote: What are the chances the opening line of the theme song “There’s no need to fear – Underdog is here!” was inspired by Dr Smith’s similar catch phrase in LOST IN SPACE?

You are only a few years younger than me, so I’m not sure why it escaped your notice. But since I was born in 1963, I must have seen most of them in reruns. My older brother no doubt was responsible for me seeing it at all.
Never saw the movie, but I usually hate remakes of things from my childhood (don’t get me started on Get Smart!), so it’s probably just as well!

That was so good thank you – I couldn’t believe I’d forgotten the tune! I found your point on trait switching very interesting but leaving it there for now other than to quickly say thank you for being so efficient in organising your blog that i could find your AZ stuff so easily 🙂

I still know the entire theme tune by heart. But then I imagine there’ll be many of these posts that will have tunes to stick in my brain for a week! (I’m quietly hoping that for the letter J, my childhood cartoon crush might make an appearance…) 🤞🏼

Well, I’ve already written ‘J’ and either you were a properly weird kid, or I’m going to disappoint you. But I am curious because I’m can’t think of who your childhood crush might’ve been…

I know which ‘J’ it definitely wouldn’t have been – Peter Parker’s (Spider Man) always demanding and hot-tempered newspaper editor at the Daily Bugle J. Jonah Jameson.

No one could ever love someone as insufferable as him!

I was pretty odd, if I’m honest. Just the fact I had a crush on a cartoon character should tell you as much! (I had two, but J was my favourite). I’ll reveal who it was after your post… there are three other cartoon royalty Js I can think of who you may have used though)

I think I’ve gone in a bit of a different direction than originally intended for ‘J’. It’s partly because the limited options I had for ‘X’ meant I widened the parameters slightly and once I’d done that there was one cartoon I had to include and ‘J’ was the only spot I had left. But I think I have worked out who your ‘J’ is. If I’m right it wasn’t a show I watched, but looking at it now, if I had watched it, it would definitely be in… but we’ll see if I’m right in a few days I guess.

I always found tbe line in the theme tune “tbey drink a beer and swear they’re faithful to the king” a bit odd, as if they didn’t give the time of day to the king when they were sober. Admittedly though, I was quite a dark and literal child. Still, a fantastic cartoon, with a real edge to it.

From what I can remember, the king was a bit of an idiot, so a few beers probably did help…
