A Limerick That Was More About Me Trying To Make Something Rhyme With The Town Of Reading Than Any Serious Commentary On The Current Pandemic. Also It Is Not Autobiographical

There was a young man from Reading
Who was worried about viruses spreading
The television news
Only served to confuse
Now he was also scared of viral shedding

This poem was well worth my heeding
(You can see where this comment is leading)
    When I sit at home
I can enjoy a good poem
And limericks are well worth the reading.

Interestingly my limerick works best for a UK reader more likely to be familiar with the pronunciation of the town of Reading but yours, conversely, is more of a challenge for UK readers who pronounce poem very differently. Language is fun.

Well, after a five-second search of the Internet I see there is a small difference. We have a Reading, Pennsylvania here so the pronunciation isn’t really foreign. In younger days of midnight and beyond Monopoly sessions a person would get seriously mocked for saying “redding” instead of “reeding” though.

They would not get mocked in my town. Although I did get my Masters Degree from Reading university which always raises some eyebrows.

I feel that non-English visitors are going to struggle to rhyme Reading with spreading, their brains will probably be bleeding from reading.

I expect all my readers to raise their game. I’m not catering for a mixed ability audience.

I bet that is not pronounced the way it’s written, but I don’t think I’d be quite as confident about writing a limerick.
