When I first started this blog, approximately eleven months ago, I had absolutely no intention of writing poetry. But somewhere along the line I seem to have been doing more than my fair share of just that.
My first effort was entitled ‘ This Is Not A Poem‘. It was meant to be a satirical one-off but it seemed to go down quite well with some actual poets, which was all the encouragement I needed to carry on and make it a regular feature.

The feature is called ‘Is It A Poem?’ because frankly I’m not certain that everything that I produce would qualify as poetry but, even though none of it should be taken too seriously, I’m relatively confident that some of my efforts would qualify, at least, as being bad poetry.
I do quite enjoy writing my little poemy-type things and my efforts at Haiku are particularly pleasing, mostly because they never take very long to write.
I am aware, however, that my Haiku are not, in fact, quite following the rules. I usually manage the 5,7,5 syllable split, but that’s about as far as I get.
So really I’m writing things that look a bit like Haiku but are in fact not Haiku at all.
But I’m not about to stop writing them now.
So as a kind of companion piece to ‘This Is Not A Poem’ and I give you my latest poor effort at Haiku:
This Is Not Haiku
Lazy composing
Lines of five, seven and five
Haiku by numbers

Great job! I haven’t done poetry since a teenager…but it’s not easy to do.

Thanks. It’s a bit like riding a bike. In that I’m not great at that either…
