James Proclaims (6)

Regular readers of my annual festive countdown (if indeed such people exist) may be aware that I generally enjoy the kind of movies, which don’t rely on an overly functional cerebrum. But I do sometimes enjoy a film which does require a bit more engagement on the part of my brain.

2015’s Carol is such a film. A slow-moving period drama that doesn’t rely (and indeed often eschews) dialogue as a device to move the narrative forward is generally not the kind of thing I choose to spend my time watching. But once again my largely pointless devotion to cataloguing all movies with a Christmas connection has moved me out of my comfort zone and rewarded me for my endeavours. Carol is nothing short of excellent.

Score for Christmasishness

This is not a Christmas film in the sense that ‘being set at Christmas time’ is not its raison d’etre. But most of the film is set in and around the festive period and quite explicitly so. Christmas does serve as a fairly major plot device at several junctures and the Christmas setting does enhance what would already be a great movie.

  1. It’s not often that the word excellent appears in your Advent adventures!
