Is It Maths Or Chemistry?

James Proclaims (4)

With ever-changing specifications, there is an increasing tendency to make exam questions more pertinent to real life.

Sensing an opportunity to make my fortune, I’m submitting the question below for the consideration of all of the major UK examination boards.

See how you get on with it.

Bruce and Debbie have a bag of coloured marbles. There are nine marbles in all, each one a different colour.

Bruce takes one marble out, looks at it and puts it back.

He repeats this action fifty times.

What is the probability that Debbie wishes she’d never married Bruce?

Remember to show all of your workings.

Well that is of course the answer to life, the universe and everything, so it’s hard to mark you wrong. But as it’s a probability question you really should have expressed your answer as a fraction, a decimal or a percentage so I’m afraid I can’t give you full marks.

I always sucked at Maths, so no surprise really.
