Roses are red
Violets are blue
Except (of course)
That isn’t true

Because a rose by any other name
Might smell as sweet
But a rose by any other colour
Would still be a rose
And a rose can be many colours
Though the colour known as ‘rose’
Is a kind of pink

And violets are really not blue
The clue is in the name
Because a violet by any other name
Would still be the colour violet
Which is really more purple
Than blue

Reads like something from The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. ✌🏼

    …So true.

It is right? Why would you call a blue flower a violet?

        Perhaps some folk are colourblind
Perhaps some can’t make up their mind
But still this much is always true:
        That violets are never blue.

You need to audition for the half-time segment of 8 out of 10 does Countdown 😉

I refuse to audition for anything – they need to approach me (which is the attitude that has kept me working in education for all these years…)

Oh, naturally you would be hired as soon as you turned up. Just for show, make it look fair on the rest of them 😉

Very nice, James. That’s a very touching, and surprisingly factually accurate, piece of poetry for Valentine’s Day. Sadly, it was just a touch too long or I’d have added it to the card I left with the chocolates for my wife.

You sir, are brilliant. If I had a hat I would be taking it off to you. Many thanks for your seemingly simple, yet deeply thought provoking posts x Be happy mate x

Thank-you. I may have just turned the colour of a rose…

Now, this is my kind of poetry. If I got that in a card, I’d be putty.

It was the symmetry and simultaneous beauty of the etymological and philosophical arguments that got me all choke up, anyway. I can’t speak for others.
