I don’t know if it’s a modern phenomenon
Or just something that has become more evident
Thanks to the prevalence of social media
But I’ve noticed that some people apparently feel the need
To claim that their accomplishments
Are more impressive than they probably are
It’s the kind of thing that one might expect
From politicians and so-called celebrities
But I think it extends to many other sectors of society
And I find it puzzling
Because, surely an embellishment of one’s achievements
Can only lead to two responses
Either people will not believe the claims to be true
And consequently create their own, less flattering, interpretations
Interpretations, which may be more damning than the actual truth
Or, alternatively, they will believe the claims of unparalleled success
In which case the most likely reaction would be resentment
And ultimately I can’t see how either response is desirable
Nonetheless, I thought it might be fun
To come up with my own, wildly over-the-top, brag
Safe in the knowledge that anyone reading this
Would know that my claims are meant ironically
However, when it came to it
I struggled to think of an appropriate pretence
Because my own achievements are so overwhelmingly impressive
From my movie-star good looks
To my singular genius
And not forgetting my humbling modesty
I realised that I truly am #blessed
And when you are as perfect as I am
It really is hard to oversell yourself
There is actually a third option when you over sell yourself. Some person might come along and tell you the truth.
So In regard to your perfection…
Stay well and laugh when you can

I can only imagine that if you told me the truth that my ego might become a little inflated so probably best not to.

No I was just going to ask Why have I never met you at the perfection meetings??

I’ve been doing some motivational speaking at the ‘I wish I was better’ seminars. Those people need my help.

Recalled to mind Mac Davis singing, “Oh Lord It’s Hard To Be Humble…”

Even though that song was released forty years ago, I think it’s safe to say that he plagiarized me…

Far too modest… unless you’re a great ‘Merican.

I agree wholeheartedly James. However, I feel obliged to send this off for moderation by a really nice algorithm I know. The result should be with you by February 2022.

That does seem the fairest way under the circumstances

Don’t worry. You will be marked down, but that mark will be rescinded JUST AFTER IT IS TOO LATE!

Are you running for US President, by any chance?

If I was I would be the very best of all the presidents with the best words and the highest IQ and anyone who disagreed with me would be stupid and a liar and probably a criminal.

I avoid this by having absolutely no achievements at all.

Which is something of an achievement in itself. Well done!

Interesting thoughts about people either believing or disbelieving the embellishment. (Quick question off topic – are your schools going back in soon or is everything staying on line?)

Officially we are going back at the beginning of September. But my school is currently planning 3 different scenarios and we don’t yet know for definite which will happen. Based on everything that has happened so far I’m not certain we’ll really know until the day we go back and I expect we’ll be making it up as we go along

We’re back at the end of August and we’re in class. I’m at a private ballet school (teaching English) so I have very few students in a class and the kids are disciplined so I think it will be okay with masks and distancing. I hope things go well for your district. It’s a scary time.

I’m pretty sure if we can get it wrong we will and my job is to deal with the kids who are least likely to comply with expectations. So that’ll be fun. It’s less the kids I’m worried about than the adults who will be surprised that these kids can’t cope even though I’ve already told them why they won’t cope.

The fact that you have the most challenging kids says something good about you as a teacher. I’m sure your sense of humour has everything to do with why you can manage them. 😊 Good luck with it.

I would say, James, that for the perfect human it is almost impossible to oversell yourself – yet you have managed it. There obviously really is no end to your talents…

It can be challenging being better that everyone else but I always manage to exceed my expectations

Well expressed, though I think that it is alright for people to be “overly” proud of their achievements, because though it might not sound too impressive, it might still have taken them much hard work. Though when people boast and/or make up pure fibs then it is simply annoying!

People should always be proud of actual achievements but I don’t think there’s much to be gained from airbrushing our lives to create the illusion that we’re something that we’re not.

Definitely true and you are very right in saying this happens too often.
