We are, once again, at that time of the week when I post a picture produced by my daughter, with her washable felt tip pens, and make the bold claim that it is art.
This particular bit of my blog has been going on for months but the last few weeks have been given over to the pictures she produced early in September when a relatively mild cold prevented me from taking her out in public due to the fact that the symptoms of the common cold are potentially similar to a certain virus that appears to have broken the world.
This particular entry is the seventh of the nine pieces she produced that weekend. ‘7 of 9’ was a character in one of the Star Treks. I’ve watched all of the Star Treks, but my daughter has no interest in Star Trek. So this has nothing to do with Star Trek.
I quite like Star Trek, but not as much as I like Star Wars.
This drawing also has nothing to do with Star Wars. Although Little Proclaims has shown some interest in a toy lightsaber. The toy lightsaber is actually mine, but I didn’t buy it for myself. Someone else bought it for me. I am glad they did though. It’s quite good fun.
And, as it turns out, an excellent way to entertain a two-year-old.
But to reiterate, this picture, if it is of anything at all, is not of anything in either Star Trek or Star Wars.
To this eye, a blue saint is in a winters forest that is starting to catch afire?
It’s art, Jim, but not as I know it.
One minute she’s waving the light sabre, the next the the Faber-Castell.
OK, I’m out of Star Trek/aWars references.

I think you have boldly gone as far as you could reasonably be expected to

You say it’s nothing to do with Star Wars, but that definitely looks like a wookie to me.

I’ll concede that there are wookish elements

No Star Trek indeed. I have two words for you…. Mutara Nebula.
You can see the Enterprise ghosting through the centre. James, you are a wind up merchant.

Which would move us into another sub-genre of sci-fi entirely.

Does Little Proclaims like the Muppets? I ask because I think she has drawn Animal.

She appears to be a fan of me, and I’m often a bit of a muppet.

I thought this was a reproduction of the chem trails left in space by the Federation ships, with their war/not war mentality, trying to condition the masses.

It’s that kind of attitude that will get you kicked out of Starfleet…

Philistines all! Star Trek, Star Wars? Tosh, utter tosh. I’m sorry if it hurts your pride, but remember, Pride comes before the fall.
Fall. There we have it. This young artist has again surpassed all expectations and captured perfectly the sheer grandeur of the Autumnal brilliance which our American cousins insist on calling Fall. She has depicted the forest floor sublimely and hints of the myriad creatures relying on the rot and decay are there for all to witness. The new work is out of this world. Stellar!

Well, you just opened my eyes to a whole universe of previously unseen interpretations. Colour me embarrassed in my artless and unworldly ignorance.

I think it’s best if we leaf it there
