James’ Shamelessly Nostalgic A-Z Of Albums That He Liked To Listen To When He Was Younger – Part 25: Yours Truly Angry Mob

James Proclaims (6)

As ever, when we get to the penultimate day of an A-Z challenge, we must ask ourselves ‘Y’.

It can be hard to come up with an answer, but today I have managed to do just that.

Y is for Yours Truly Angry Mob

In their early days, Kaiser Chiefs always struck me as a band that would have been quite at home in the 90s Britpop scene. I don’t think they necessarily would have been one of the stand-out acts of that period, but they’d have been far from the worst.

In the noughties, they were quite possibly a little bit out of synch with the zeitgeist, but it didn’t stop them from being hugely popular for a few years. I was surprised to discover that they are still going though. Of their seven studio albums to date, I’m really only familiar with two and if I’m honest there are other bands whose back catalogues I’d be more interested in exploring than Kaiser Chiefs.

They were a lot of fun at their peak though and those first two albums are always worth revisiting when I’m on a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

Employment is probably the better album overall, but the follow-up Yours Truly Angry Mob opens with one of the most memorable hits of the noughties in Ruby.

This one does lollop along very nicely, I gotta say.

I listened to that one in my car all the time. I think, my favourite was “love’s not a competition (but I am winning)”. I did not know that they are still active…

I was surprised too but their latest album came out in 2019. No idea if it’s any good though…

Music has strong ties to memories for me. Ruby will always be a tent party I went down to in Cornwall – dancing barefoot in an orchard for most of the night with some amazing friends that I’ve not seen for years.

This song is definitely evocative of a few good memories for me too. Although they are quite ‘hazy’ memories for the most part…
