The James Proclaims NaNoWriMo/NaBloPoMo Adventure – Day 2

James Proclaims (4)

It is day 2 of November 2021 and consequently day 2 of my pledge to produce a badly written novel of circa 50,000 words by the end of the month in honour of NaNoWriMo and to simultaneously blog about the experience of writing said novel in honour of NaBloPoMo.

If this ever seemed like a good idea, it’s certainly now feeling like quite a bad idea. I don’t have time to do this. I have a full time job during the day and a three-year-old to occupy my evenings. Also it’s cold and dark and I really just want to sleep. This would have been so much more convenient in August. Although, as I recall, this August I was busy procrastinating over completing a course for a qualification that may or may not be useful in furthering my career (although I’m fairly confident that it won’t as I fear I have climbed as high as I’m ever likely to on my current career ladder and frankly it’s already higher than I had any reasonable right to expect).

Nonetheless, August, in general, would be a much more convenient month for this kind of thing. But rules are rules and even if the rules of NaNoWriMo are pretty flexible, and there are no legal barriers to me attempting this sort of thing in August and calling it NaNoWriMo, I would know, in my heart of hearts, that I wasn’t fully participating in the real event. And it is all about the joy of mass participation, because there is absolutely no way that this novel is going to be anything other than complete rubbish.

Anyway, I’ve committed to doing this now, and those people who followed my 31 days of blogging about nothing but Star Wars back in May 2020, will understand that once I have fully invested in a writing challenge, I will see it through to the bitter end, even if no good can possibly come of it.

But I did promise to keep these posts short. So I will.

For the sake of posterity I will take a moment to record my novel’s current word count and then I’ll probably go to bed.

As things stand I have written 4,100 words of which 521 were completed today.

Overall I’m still on target, but I’ll need to up my game to remain so by the end of the week.
