This week I found myself recording at home again. My children are off school this week which has made recording during sociable hours tricky. And the weather has been horrendous so recording outside has also been off the table.
Speaking of being ‘off the table’, my children’s enthusiasm for Lego has rendered my dining table out of action too, so I had to relocate to the living room area of my weirdly open-plan ground floor. Unfortunately, one of the lightbulbs has gone so the lighting was terrible. This may be a blessing in disguise because my downstairs really needs a lick of paint.
Well, it needs a lot more than that in truth, but a lick of paint might temporarily make me feel better about things.
Anyway, the lighting is terrible and because I couldn’t use the dining table, and also because I once again found myself recording at a time when I really would have preferred to be in bed, I resorted to using the USB microphone again and it is becoming abundantly clear how inferior it is to the XLR mic.
Which is a lesson I thought I’d already learnt but apparently I need to make the same mistakes a few times before the lesson truly kicks in.
So it’s hopefully back to the XLR mic and better lighting next week.
Still, once you get over the poor light and sound on this one, I think some of the content is OK actually.
I’m still largely winging it, but I do think I’m getting closer to taking flight these days.
Does that metaphor work?
I’m not sure, but if questionable metaphors are your thing then you could do worse than listen to an episode of my podcast.
