Day 9 of this A-Z malarkey and it is time for ‘I’.

The letter ‘I’ obviously.

Not me.

If it was me I’d have said ‘it is time for me’.

Because ‘me’ would be the correct pronoun to use in that sentence.

That’s just basic grammar.

But it’s not time for me, it’s time for ‘I’.

I is for I Should Coco

When Supergrass released their debut album in 1995, they seemed like they might just be about to become huge.

And outside of the Britpop ‘big 4’ of Oasis, Blur, Pulp and Suede, they may well have been the best of the rest.

But like so many bands of that era, they shone brightly for only the briefest of times really. Their subsequent albums are all fine and they occasionally popped up in the top 40 singles charts in ensuing years.

But Supergrass were really all about the summer of 1995 and that happened to be the summer I turned 16 and completed my GCSE exams.

It was one of the most glorious summers of my youth (when viewed through my rose-tinted nostalgia spectacles) and ‘I Should Coco’ featured heavily on the soundtrack.

No song more so than their very summer-friendly single ‘Alright’.

  1. According to Gaz Coombes’ Wikipedia entry, they refused the media invitations to do the usual fluffy and not musically-related stuff at the time, so I suppose they weren’t promoted in the same way in return. Hence ‘In it For the Money’ (CD still lurking here somewhere I expect…) was next.

    1. I expect they still made plenty of money though…

      1. Oh yes, true… but it just was more a by-product of what they were already doing rather than exploiting any and all means presented to them to increase it… allegedly.

Here from the A-Z and thanks for the grammar lesson 🙂 1995 – I was nowhere near 16, but still…enjoyed the music. Somehow every time I think of the 90’s, Spice Girls seem to shove out all other names from my brain…

    1. Nothing bad to say about the Spice Girls. They weren’t really my thing but they were definitely a phenomenon.

    1. I didn’t remember that. Weirdly I’ve got another one from that soundtrack tomorrow. Although now I look at it, it does look like a surprisingly decent soundtrack. I think I found the film surprisingly good too, but it’s been a while.

Finally a band I recognise! Actually, I only recognised the song not the band but close enough!

  7. I bought that album purely on the basis of Alright.

It’s a great song, and very much the highlight of the album and the band’s career.
