A decade ago, in the first November of this blog’s existence, I wrote a post on the day of Thanksgiving to explain that I didn’t really know what Thanksgiving is, but with a vague acknowledgment that, even in the early days of James Proclaims some of my readers live in the USA and I should probably find out.

Two years on, in November 2017, my readership was booming, with quite a lot of US readers and I felt I should acknowledge the day again, having not bothered to educate myself since my previous post on the matter.

These days I hardly ever update my blog and have very few readers, but of my very small following, a reasonable proportion are based in the States.

I don’t know why these people persist in reading my blog. I clearly make no effort whatsoever to accommodate them. I have been to America in the past (Boston for my honeymoon and various bits of California because I have some family there), and I really liked it. I obviously watch loads of American movies and TV shows. But I still no nothing about Thanksgiving, beyond the fact that it’s at the end of November, and it looks a bit like Christmas to the uninitiated, but isn’t Christmas.

And you can’t buy pumpkin pie over here. So I haven’t scratched that itch. I’ve found recipes for it, but I can’t imagine I’ll ever get around to making it myself.

Nonetheless, if Thanksgiving is a thing that you celebrate, then I really hope you’re having a good one.

And if you know where I can buy some pumpkin pie in the UK, then let me know. I’m vaguely curious as to what all the fuss is about.

  1. I get the impression that a lot of food is eaten that would normally not be eaten, and it’s done because it was always thus!
