Appreciation of 2012’s Ted is quite possibly dependent on whether or not you can tolerate the relentless nature of writer/director Seth MacFarlane’s approach to comedy. It’s not all cerebral, some of it is very much ‘lowest common denominator’ stuff. But if there is a joke to be found then you can rely on MacFarlane to find it and while that make for a hit and miss approach, there are more hits here than misses.

Throw in a nostalgia fest for 80s and 90s pop culture and you’d probably have won me over anyway, but the central concept about what happens to the magical childhood friend (in this case a walking, talking teddy bear) when the child grows up is pretty clever. I was always going to enjoy this.

Score for Christmasishness

The movie is mainly not set at Christmas but the opening scenes which depict the magical eponymous plush toy coming to life are very Christmassy. Plus the titular character is a Christmas present. I’d say that qualifies the movie as being fairly Christmas(ish).
