It’s Just Another Thursday Here

James Proclaims (4)

It didn’t really occur to me when I started this blog that I would have any readers outside of my existing friends and family, and I imagined that even they would probably only give it a cursory glance from time to time, and then only out of a weary sense of loyalty.

So even though my current following is modest compared to some of the blogging behemoths out there, I am pretty ecstatic that I receive regular attention from fellow bloggers from all over the world.

And many of my regular readers are from the USA. And apparently it’s a special day across the Atlantic today.

For according to my sources, today is Thanksgiving Day.

I’m not celebrating it.

I almost entitled this post “Why I won’t be celebrating Thanksgiving this year’ because that’s exactly the kind of inflammatory ‘click-bait’ that would attract loads of visitors to my blog.

But  it would have been a cynical move. The only reason I’m not celebrating Thanksgiving is because I’m British and we don’t have it over here.

I don’t even really know what it is.

I mean I sort of do know, because I watch lots of American films and TV shows and often Thanksgiving will happen in them and it jars for a moment because I don’t fully understand the cultural reference. But then I rationalise it by equating it to something that looks a bit like Christmas and I pretend that it is just Christmas and then I’m ok. Like in the Steve Martin/John Candy comedy classic ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’. I just pretend that Steve Martin is desperate to get home to his family for Christmas rather than Thanksgiving and the whole film makes perfect sense.

Nonetheless, if you are celebrating Thanksgiving today then I hope you’re having a nice time. I salute you for having a holiday in November, because if a month ever needed a redeeming feature then it’s November.

Plus you still get to have Christmas too.

Well played America.

I had to work today. My lunch was two ham rolls and a packet of crisps. I’m not complaining but it’s hardly a festive feast is it?

I’d have rather had a slice of pumpkin pie.

Or would I?

I’ve never actually tasted it.

I am curious about pumpkin pie.

I wonder if I’d like it.

I think thanksgiving is a pig out version of our harvest festival. I saw Alice’s Restauarant many years ago and that’s about as much as I know about thanksgiving.

Don’t worry, you’re not missing much. Thanksgiving depresses the hell out of me, actually. Couldn’t tell you why.
I have a great recipe for pumpkin pie, but it makes something like two pies, depending on how much milk you use. That’s a lot of pumpkin for someone who doesn’t even know they like pumpkin pie. =P
    All the best.

Yeah two pies might be overkill. But if I like it then two pies would be perfect…

True. Or you could cut the recipe in half, but that seems a bit messy to me. Ah well.

You should definitely try pumpkin pie! It’s not just for Thanksgiving. 🙂

You’ve convinced me. Not sure how easy it’ll be to get over here but I’m sure it’s possible. Or I could make it myself. But that sounds like more effort than I’m prepared to put in…

I can see where Brits don’t get into the Thanksgiving thing. After all, it is a celebration of leaving the Mother Country and surviving through some pretty serious hardships. Be that as it may, all holidays are what you make of them. For me, pumpkin pie is just about the best part. With just a dab of whipped cream on top. I do hope you get a chance to try it. Would love to know your reaction.

Trying it is now very high on my list of things I really need to do…

It’s delicious, nothing at all like Marmite. (Couldn’t help it…) Would like to hear you expound sometime on Guy Faulk’s Day, I’m totally clueless on that one.

Yeah I missed that one – from what I recall I wrote a post about how I couldn’t think of anything to write about on the 5th November which seems a bit silly with hindsight. Maybe next year.
