Other Yeast Extracts Are Available

James Proclaims (4)

I just enjoyed two slices of Marmite on toast.

It was a thoroughly pleasant late evening snack, which should  help me persevere with some of the tasks I need to complete before I head off to the Land of Nod.

The Land of Nod is not an actual place. It is a metaphor for being asleep.

I wish it was an actual place.

But I digress.

For this post is about Marmite, the savoury spread made from yeast extract that is a fundamental cornerstone of British culture.

My Mate, Marmite, to quote an old advertising campaign (from the nineties I believe)

Not the most famous of the advertising slogans that are attributed to this particular product. Because who could ever actually be friends with a jar of yeast extract?

No, Marmite is not my mate. But I do quite like Marmite. It is one of my preferred toast toppings.

But I worry that makes me a bit of an anomaly.

Because I like Marmite, but I don’t love Marmite.

And apparently that’s breaking all the rules.

It’s a commonly accepted truism that one either loves or hates the stuff.

Certainly it’s a far better known advertising slogan than that ‘My Mate’ nonsense.

Marmite – you either love it or you hate it.

There’s no place for those of us that quite like it.

When the Marmite wars are finally declared, I guess I’ll have to be on the side of the Marmite lovers.

I won’t fight with any passion, but I suppose my sympathies would be more naturally aligned with theirs.

Unless they declare that all anyone can eat is Marmite.

Then I’d have to join the haters.

Let’s just hope the ceasefire can be maintained.

Otherwise I might have to leave the UK and move to a country where there is no Marmite.

Which is basically everywhere else in the world as I understand it.

I wonder if they have Marmite in the Land of Nod.

Among the nastiest stuff I’ve ever tasted. I do believe that’s what the colonies actually fought over instead of tea, but the Boston Marmite Party doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. Plus no respectable colonist would grieve over marmite being tossed into the harbour.

Yes, come to Australia James and you will have World War III on your hands. Aussies eat VEGEMITE. Marmite just doesn’t do it for them. I’m not a lover of either. But Aussies leaving for UK wouldn’t dream of departing without a large jar of Vegemite. It is a National Icon: https://www.vegemite.com.au/

Yeah I’ve heard of this Vegemite stuff. Never tasted it, fairly sure I’d quite like it, but patriotic pride moves me to declare that Marmite is better without a shred of evidence…

Hello 🙂 You will be very pleased to know there is a land of Nod. I refer you to The Bible, Genesis chapter 4, it says ‘Cain settled in the land of Nod, East of Eden’. Of course if you don’t believe every word The Bible has to say, you may still not believe in the land of Nod … that is up to you.

I’m quite impressed that I accidentally made a biblical reference. Regardless of other beliefs I may of may not have, I absolutely choose to believe in the land of Nod…

I do not like Marmite at all and as for toast why not put marmalade on it, so tasty.

I’m ok with a nice marmalade if truth be told.

Living in the US I have never tasted your Marmite, so there is no animosity intended when I say “There’s no accounting for taste.” Love it or Hate it – your call. Nice post.

Thanks. There is indeed no accounting for taste but Marmite does provoke some quite emotional responses in people…

I made gravy last nite using Marmite. Winner. Told no one so they couldn’t say “Don’t like Marmite…” 🙂
